When Should I Replace My Jeeps Battery?

When To Replace Your Jeep's Battery

When Should I Replace My Jeep's Battery?

Advice from the Service Department at Akins CDJR

Non-hybrid Jeeps have a single battery under the hood to store electricity. Mechanics usually refer to this as an “SLI” battery, with SLI standing for “starting, lighting, and ignition.” This type of battery is designed by the manufacturer to provide enough current in order to start your Jeep’s engine and then power up your lights and accessories.

If you keep your Jeep long enough, however, at some point it will need a new SLI battery. That’s because lead-acid batteries tend to last between 4 to 5 years and then need to be replaced. And, it may be a shorter amount of time if you do a lot of off-roading. This is because bumpy trails can be hard on a battery with all the jarring and bouncing around that goes on.

How do I know if my Jeep needs a new battery?

As we suggested, after 4-5 years a new lead-acid battery usually gets "old" and needs to be replaced.  The problem is it is sometimes hard to tell when that time has come. What you want to avoid is finding out the hard way, you know when your Jeep won’t start because your battery has quit. Here are a few symptoms to look for to avoid that “surprise.”

Slow engine cranking – When you attempt to start your Jeep, especially when it’s cold outside, it cranks over slowly. This is a classic sign of a failing battery.

The battery “dies” easily – If your Jeep isn’t running and you leave your lights on, the battery should power the lights for 10-15 minutes. If this isn’t the case and your headlights dim in a few minutes, it’s probably time for a new battery.

The battery warning light comes on – Your Jeep’s battery warning light should turn on when your battery is losing charge. A mechanic can quickly diagnose whether this is your alternator or battery failing. 99% of the time, it’s one of those two.

Question: Can I drive with my battery warning light on?

This is a common question. If your Jeep’s battery warning light comes on while driving, it usually means that the alternator isn’t working properly and your car is operating “solely on battery power.” Unfortunately this will cause the battery to drain quickly, leaving you stranded. So, if your battery warning light illuminates, it’s best to find a safe place to pull over and seek assistance.  Hello AAA!
