Power and Handling of the Ram 1500 TRX

Brought to you by Akins Jeep Ram Dodge Chrysler of Winder, GA

The 2021 Ram 1500 TRX is the fastest, most powerful off-road truck on the market today. Its 702-horsepower engine was drafted from the Hellcat line of Dodge cars but in the TRX it has been modified for high-speed racing. While the suspension has been engineered for extreme Baja racing, the engineers at Ram have built the TRX to provide a comfortable ride when used for ordinary transportation too. Inside the TRX is just as impressive. The interior has almost luxury appointments, as well as a serious complement of infotainment and other electronic technology. But where the TRX really shines is in it's power and handling. Here’s what you should know about the engine and suspension of the new 2021 Ram 1500 TRX.

What makes this the most powerful truck today?

The 2021 Ram 1500 TRX is powered by a 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 engine. This is a version of the 707-horsepower Hellcat engine that is found in top models of the Dodge Challenger and Charger. The Ram version puts out 702 horsepower instead of 707 and offers 650 lb-ft of torque @ 4,800 rpm. That minor power loss is because of a different exhaust manifold and the use of a deep sump oil pan.

Gear changing is handled by a high-torque-capacity TorqueFlite 8HP95 eight-speed automatic transmission which has been specially designed to deliver quick, crisp gear changes during both normal and performance driving conditions.

As you might imagine, the TRX posts some impressive speed specs. It travels from 0-60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds and 0-100 mph in 10.5 seconds. At the drag strip, the TRX does the quarter mile in 12.9 seconds at 108 mph. Top speed is 118 mph.

How good is the TRX off-road?

In a nutshell, the 2021 Ram TRX has been designed to be one of the best off-road vehicles ever made.  Underneath, an all-new, unique suspension system with active damping, inspired by desert off-road racers, has been installed. It incorporates forged aluminum front upper and lower control arms and is designed with special attention to caster and camber angles during suspension cycling. Designed exclusively for the TRX, new front and rear 2.5-inch Bilstein Black Hawk e2 adaptive performance shocks provide fast reaction time, unbeatable damping, and improved heat dissipation.

Mid-ships, a full-time active transfer case features upgraded internals for improved strength and durability. In the rear, the TRX uses a Dana 60 solid rear axle with a 3.55 ratio featuring full-floating hubs and axle-hop damper for improved traction and axle control on rough surfaces. An electronic locking rear differential is standard for increased performance when traction is variable. Wheel travel is greater than 13 inches at all four corners, an increase of more than 40 percent compared to the rest of the Ram 1500 lineup.

The 2021 Ram TRX benefits from up to 32 inches of water fording, up to 8,100 pounds towing, and a maximum payload capacity of 1,310 pounds.
