The Checklist

Oil and Oil Filter Change: One of the most important things you can do for your Dodge Challenger or Ram 1500 is to routinely change out the oil and prescribed in your owner’s manual or instructed by your service advisor. The oil is the lifeblood of your vehicle, keeping all the engine’s moving parts properly lubricated so they can do their job. If you skip out on changing your oil, it will start to age, taking on dirt and debris and clogging the oil filter. This can lead to serious engine problems that can be very expensive to fix.

Check Fluid Levels: There are many other fluids that make your engine run just as it should and they need to be checked on as well. They include power steering, transmission, coolant, brake, and even windshield wiper fluid. When checking on the levels of these fluids and topping them off as needed, it is important that you remember that the coolant, power steering, and brake fluid systems are all closed, which means if they are lower than they should be, there could be a leak somewhere that needs tending to as soon as possible.

Inspect the Battery: Extreme temperatures can be pretty rough on your battery. As you are already underneath the hood, take a moment to check on the condition of your battery. Things to look out for include corrosion around the connections, as well as that the connections are secured tightly. You should also check that the battery is properly mounted to avoid movement when driving. If you see that your battery is older than five years old, you should swap it out for a newer model as soon as possible.

Check Tire Tread and Inflation: Moving out from underneath the hood of your vehicle, you should also check on your tires. First up is the tread. You can easily monitor the tread of your tire by conducting the “penny test”. Simply place a penny with President Lincoln’s head facing down into the tread (in multiple places on the tire, in all four tires) and if you can see the very top of his head, it is time for some new tires. You should also check the air in your tires. Proper inflation is very important, it can even help you save gas! You can reference the information in your owner’s manual or ask our service advisors to know just how much air your tires need.
