About Athens GeorgiaAthens, Georgia, is a consolidated city-county known as Athens-Clarke County located in the northeastern part of the state. Toward the end of the 1700s, Cedar Shoals-an old trading settlement on the banks of the Oconee River-stood where Athens stands today. On July 25, 1801, John Milledge bought 633 acres of land from Daniel Easley and donated it to the University of Georgia, which was the first state-supported university. Milledge named the surrounding area Athens after the city in Greece that was home to the academy of Plato and Aristotle. Presently, there are thirteen neighborhoods in the consolidated city-county of Athens-Clarke County, which include Pulaski Heights, Normaltown, Beechwood, and Carr's Hill. There are many points of interest in Athens-Clarke County, such as the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, the Georgia Museum of Art, and one of the two remaining double-barreled cannons produced during the American Civil War.
