2020 Ram 1500 Wins Safety Award
The Ram 1500’s trophy case is getting a little crowded but it’s making room for one more from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, also known as the IIHS. The Ram 1500 has earned the Top Safety Pick+ award and is the only full-size pickup truck to ever do so! We knew the Ram 1500 was a safe and reliable truck, but now we have an award to prove it. Ram is very proud that the IIHS has recognized the Ram 1500 for its incredible safety story. What is that safety story? It all starts with the innovations taken with Ram’s patented approach to the frame-rail construction. The Ram 1500’s front frame-rails are splayed to enhance the way crash energy is managed in certain frontal collision situations. Of the six crashworthiness evaluations the IIHS conducted with the Ram 1500, the truck recorded the highest possible rating, “good”, in each. Three of the evaluations simulated frontal impacts while the other three inflicted damage consistent with a rollover, rear impact, and side-impact.
Under the current IIHS guidelines, the 2020 Ram 1500 Crew Cab and 2019 Crew Cab models are the very first full-size pickup trucks to earn the Top Safety Pick+ award, the highest rating awarded by the organization. This rating specifically applies to all 2020 Ram 1500 models and 2019 models, produced after May of this year, that are equipped with the adaptive LED projector headlamps that offer high-beam assist, Forward Collision Mitigation, and Ram’s Automatic Emergency Braking (also known as AEB) technology.
The Top Safety Pick+ award was enabled by the Ram’s available adaptive LED projector headlamps configured with high-beam assist. This technology was further refined in May of this year and earned the IIHS’s highest rating of “good”. A feature unique to the Ram 1500 that helped the truck earn this safety award is the use of an Integrated Radar Camera Module, or the IRCM, that accommodates Forward Collision Mitigation. The IRCM combines camera and radar components behind the truck’s rearview mirror to simplify their interface and keep important technology out of harm's way in the event of a collision simultaneously.
Ram’s Forward Collision Mitigation technology earned a “superior” rating from the IIHS. This optional feature utilizes sensor-fusion technology, blending radar detection and camera capability to determine when a frontal impact is imminent. The system then warns the driver to take action to avoid the collision and if the driver does or cannot act in a timely manner, it activates the truck’s brakes to reduce the impact of the collision.
