Top Tips for Safe Off-Roading

Four-wheeling can open your eyes to new places and challenges. This exciting sport will take you to places you never thought possible and show your unbelievable views. However, it is important to stay safe to have the most enjoyable ride. Below you will find some fundamental rules for a safer and more enjoyable ride.

Let Someone Know Where You're Going

Always let someone know where you are going and when you expect to be back. This is important even if you are not going to a challenging area. People have gotten lost or stranded in even the most familiar places. If something happens and you cannot get help, your friends or family will know to contact the authorities.

Better to Be Safe Than Sorry

Most off-roaders have stories about encountering unknown terrain, plummeting down a steep incline, or falling into a deep rut and causing damage to their vehicle. The main mistake is not adequately researching the planned route. Be sure to check out any water-covered trails before driving through them. You don't know what's lurking beneath the surface. Even if you've seen other cars go through a water-covered path, it's still a good idea to check it out yourself. There could be a hidden hazard that you can't see from the road. If you're unsure if a water-covered route is safe, it's always best to err on the side of caution and turn around.

Slow Down and Enjoy the Ride

Speed is rarely the solution for conquering obstacles. Driving too fast can work a vehicle too hard. Off-road drivers know that going too fast is a recipe for disaster. The mantra of off-road driving is "As Slow As Possible, As Fast As Necessary." This means you should only go as fast as necessary to clear an obstacle. You will likely get stuck or damage your vehicle if you try to go too fast.

Stay On The Trail

Trying to blaze your own trail can get you stuck and damage the trail. It's always recommended to stick to previously used paths whenever possible. This way, you'll know that the trail is passable, and you'll be less likely to damage the environment. However, even following a pre-existing path, be aware that the conditions can change. Just because someone else made it through before doesn't mean you will. The weather, the terrain, and even the time of day can all affect the difficulty of a trail.
