We want your teen to be safe on the road just as much as you do. That is why we had our team put together a list of driving tips that you and your teen can go over together before they embark on their first solo trip. Keep reading to learn all about them and how Akins CDJR can help you keep your teen safe!
Safe Driving Tips for Teens:
Make Sure the Vehicle Meets Your Needs: When you first get into the car, it is important to ensure that it is suited to your needs, and if you are sharing a vehicle with parents or siblings, these are steps you need to take every time you get behind the wheel. Teens, you need to adjust the seat so you can comfortably reach the steering wheel and pedals. You also need to adjust all the mirrors so that you can see as much as possible from your seat position. The last step before turning the car on is buckling up. This doesn’t necessarily need to be adjusted but is an important step before you hit the road.
Keep the Cell Phone Silenced: Cell phones have been a very large distraction in life and on the road. We know your teen wants to stay connected with their friends and social media but that should be saved for when they are in the passenger seat. When driving, it is easy to want to check the latest notification but taking your eyes off the road for even a second can be dangerous. We suggest that you keep your cellphone in their backpack, bag or the glove compartment to ensure they are not distracted by texts or other notifications.
Take it Slow: We know that it is very exciting to have your license and want to hit the road, but you can’t whip out of your driveway and speed down the road. You need to make sure that you are always following the posted speed limit and are slow to accelerate and decelerate. When hitting the gas pedal too hard or slamming the brakes, you risk losing traction when taking off/braking and that can lead to you as a driver losing control. This is dangerous for anyone, but especially new drivers and it can be avoided.
