Atlanta, Georgia, has 1190 public charging station ports within 15km. 94% of the ports are level 2 charging ports, and 42% of the ports offer free charges for your electric car. There is also 11 charging island throughout the city. One of these islands is located at 241 Ralph McGill Blvd. Atlanta’s progressive spirit correspondingly applies to the electrification of transportation. It was listed in the Top ten cities most adapted to electric vehicles in 2016. Various charging networks, including Blink, Tesla, and ChargePoint, provide the level 2 charging stations and DCFC found in nearby neighborhoods.
The Cost of Charging your EV in Atlanta
The charging islands offer multiple options for drivers, including a DC fast charger and a Level 2 208/240-volt charger. The charging islands accept a new Georgia Power Card powered by ChargePoint and available at GeorgiaPower.ChargePoint.com or an existing ChargePoint card. Charging using the DC fast charger includes a $4.95 activation fee for the first 20 minutes of charging and 25 cents per each additional minute. Charging using the Level 2 chargers consists of a $1 per hour fee for the first three hours and 10 cents per each extra minute.
Don’t Charge to the Max
With lithium-ion batteries, it’s best to charge to around 80% rather than a full charge. This is why most EVs allow you to set a “target charge” of whatever level you desire. The best-recommended charging schedule is when you are taking a long trip and want the maximum range possible, set the target charge to 100 percent. And if you are planning to drive around town, keep the “target charge” set to 80%.
Try To Keep Your EV Cool
Anyone who has spent time in Atlanta in the summer knows that it can get hot, and extremely high temperatures can damage your EV’s battery. Lithium-ion batteries like the same temperatures perform best at a balmy 70 degrees. EVs lose power under 65 degrees, and over 86 degrees rob the vehicle of power. Therefore, it is best to park your EV in the shade on hot days. This will prevent your battery from overheating and thereby reduce your charge.
