Tray Mountain Road
The Tray Mountain Road is located near the town of Helen, Georgia, and is said to be one of the most popular trails in the state. Explore approximately 14.2 miles between Tray Mountain and Tray Gap, with plenty of views along the way! This trail is relatively wide, making it accessible for your SUV. However, keep in mind that this trail is marked to be of moderate difficulty, mostly due to the deep ruts and ditches you’ll encounter along the way. For this trail, make sure your Jeep is equipped with all-terrain tires, and consider front tow hooks or even a winch to help out in case you get stuck! Plus, hikers will be happy to hear that this trail intersects with the Appalachian Trail, so you can park your Jeep in the parking area and set off on foot if you crave a hike after your drive!
Forest Service Roads
On your search for off-road trails here in Georgia, you’ve probably seen the phrase “Forest Service Road” many times. This name is used time and time again to describe the roads that wind their way through the mountains of our state. One of the most popular trails is Forest Service Road 333, which follows the Toccoa River up from the base of John Dick Mountain. Technically located in the town of Morganton, this trail is accessible on the north-western side of the Blue Ridge Wildlife Management Area. All in all, the Service Road encompasses 33.3 miles of moderate off-road trails, and is also within close proximity to the Benton MacKaye hiking trail, which offers over 300 miles of foot paths for hikers to enjoy! Many other Forest Service Roads can be found throughout the Blue Ridge area, and each one is numbered so that you can easily keep track of the different trails.
Rocky Flats Trail
The Rocky Flats Trail is located in northern Georgia near the town of Chatsworth. This trail is shorter than the previous two we’ve discussed, at around just 3.2 miles. The tradeoff is that this trail is open year-round, making it more accessible for a quick off-road drive, anytime! Despite its shorter length, you’ll find lots of obstacles along the way, as the area is thickly forested with trees, brush, and other plant life. This is also a good trail to break out your walkie-talkie or radio system, as the dense forestation can affect your cellphone service. As always, it’s best practice for off-road drivers of all skill levels to travel with a friend, no matter how short the trail may seem! This trail is accessible to a variety of visitors in vehicles, on bikes, or even on foot.
Currahee Mountain Trail
The last trail we’ll discuss is the Currahee Mountain Trail, though it’s important to note that this list is just scratching the surface of all the beautiful and challenging trails you’ll find in the state of Georgia! The Currahee Mountain Trail has a rich history within the context of World War II, just like the Jeep Wrangler itself! At the time, this trail was used as a training site for the US Army. Today, the trail offers about 5.3 miles of off-road fun, with moderately challenging terrain that you can tackle in your Jeep! This is an “out and back” trail, meaning rather than a closed loop, it will require you to turn around and go back the way you came. For off-roaders, this may even give you the chance to enjoy your favorite part of the trail a second time!
