Amazon’s Fire TV for Auto Goes Into
Wagoneers and Grand Wagoneers

Amazon’s very popular Fire TV media player is now available in a mobile version on both the 2022 Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneers. The mobile version, which Amazon has named “Fire TV for Auto,” gives passengers access to TV shows, movies, apps, and even the Alexa virtual assistant when on the road.
And, beyond Fire TV for Auto, the folks at Stellantis, Jeep’s parent company, have big plans for the future of its Uconnect 5 infotainment architecture. Christian Meunier, Jeep Brand CEO explains: “Launching Fire TV for Auto as an industry-first technology to the Wagoneer lineup illustrates one of the many ways we intend to deliver class-leading technology and connectivity to our customers.”
Exactly what is Fire TV?
Fire TV is a home-based media player roughly similar to Roku, Chromecast, and others. It allows connection to a multiplicity of streaming sources plus an interface to the Alexa virtual assistant. In the home, Fire TV devices come in a number of form factors and are designed to plug into the HDMI port of televisions and monitors.
How Does Fire TV for Auto Work?
Fire TV for Auto is the automotive version of Fire TV. It is built into a vehicle's infotainment system and allows passengers access to wi-fi connected features broadcast over cellular carriers. All that is needed to access Fire TV for Auto is a valid Amazon account.
The system as installed in 2022 Jeep Wagoneers and Grand Wagoneers includes a multi-functional remote. Because the engineers at Amazon and Jeep know that cell service can be spotty in some locations, they have designed the system to allow downloading of content in advance of a trip.
Can the driver watch programming too?
No, that would be a very bad idea! In the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, front-seat passengers can view video on a screen that incorporates a directional privacy filter so the driver’s view is obscured. (When the vehicle is in park, the driver can view programming on the main Uconnect 5 screen.) Passengers in the rear seats, however, will have full access on seatback-mounted high-definition screens and via wi-fi connected ipads and smartphones.
