What is the hybrid setup for the Grand Cherokee 4xe?
The power for any plug-in hybrid emissions vehicle comes from a combination of a gas-powered engine and electric generators powered by a rechargeable battery pack. For the Grand Cherokee 4xe, the PHEV system consists of a 2.0-Liter turbocharged Inline-4 cylinder engine, which replaces the naturally-aspirated engine. The turbocharged engine is mated to two electric motors powered by a 17-cell, 400-volt lithium-ion battery pack found underneath the rear seat. One generator is in front of the engine, replacing the alternator, and the other is behind the engine within the transmission, in place of the torque converter. This setup offers drivers a fuel-sipping 57 miles per gallon equivalent, 25 miles of fully electric driving, and 440 miles of total driving. Furthermore, the Grand Cherokee 4xe pushes out 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque! Jeep’s trusted TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission and the Quadra-Trac II 4x4 powertrain are mated to the PHEV setup.
How is the 4xe battery charged?
Since the Grand Cherokee 4xe is a PHEV, the battery is mainly recharged by a power cord, besides some advanced technologies allowing it to recharge on the go. All Grand Cherokee 4xe models come with a Level 1 EV charger. This 120-volt cord gives the 4xe’s battery a full charge in roughly twelve hours. The Level 2 EV charger can be purchased and offers 240 volts, charging the 4xe in just two hours. Besides plugging in the Grand Cherokee 4xe, Jeep uses advanced EV technology to recharge the battery while you drive. Brake Regeneration allows the battery pack to recharge while the Grand Cherokee is slowing down. The energy that the brake regen process creates is fed back to the battery to increase or maintain its charge state. The Max Regen feature can be turned on to create a more assertive brake regen calibration. This will recharge the battery when the driver lets off the gas pedal. Max Regen also brings the vehicle to a stop quicker than regular brake regeneration will.
What are the E-Selec buttons?
Three E-Selec buttons are to the left of the steering wheel on the dashboard of all Grand Cherokee 4xe models. The Hybrid, Electric, and E-Save buttons can control the vehicle’s gas and electric usage. For example, Electric mode will disable the gas engine to provide emissions-free driving. Electric mode can be used as long as the battery has at least 1% of power left. Conversely, E-Save mode disables the electric generators, allowing the battery to recharge and be saved for a later time. In addition, the E-Save mode will automatically engage when the battery completely loses its charge. Hybrid mode is the default E-Selec setting and uses electric power when at a stop or slowing down and engages the gas engine when more power is requested by pressing the gas pedal.
