All About the New Uconnect 5 System

Uconnect 5 is the umbrella term for the Stellantis' suite of information, entertainment, connectivity, audio, and security features in their 2021 model-year cars and trucks. Newly refreshed from the immensely popular Uconnect 4 system, Uconnect 5 offers a faster, easier-to-use experience thanks to more powerful processing power, upgraded display technology, and a more robust operating system.

“We didn’t want to undo what we had, we wanted to take it to the next level,” says Vince Galante, chief designer of user experience. To do so, Stellantis tripled the size of the engineering team by adding people from various backgrounds, including video game design. “It takes a new skill set into thinking and designing vehicles,” Galante explained.

Who is Stellantis?

PSA Group and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) officially merged on January 4, 2021 to create Stellantis. This exciting new company brings together 14 vehicle brands across the globe and becomes the fourth-biggest automaker in the world. Now under the Stellantis umbrella are previous FCA brands, Chrysler, Dodge, Ram, Jeep, Alfa Romeo, Abarth, Maserati, and Lancia – as well as Citroen, Opel, Peugeot, and Vauxhall.

Is the Uconnect system new?

No, Uconnect is over 10 years old! It started with the former Chrysler Group’s 2009 models. Back then, Uconnect identified the automaker’s collection of connectivity technologies. This included phone, navigation, entertainment, Wi-Fi features, and even live TV.

For 2013, Uconnect Access, a cloud-based subscription service, offered Wi-Fi, voice recognition, text message response, and app-synced controls for door locks and remote engine starting. In 2015, vehicle status features like location, health reports, and destination services were added.

Uconnect 4 was officially announced in early 2016 and included Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration. The system offered smartphone compatibility with more processing power, faster start-up times, improved touchscreen response, and higher screen resolutions.

What's new in Uconnect 5?

Uconnect 5 was developed so that many functions are now accessible with a single touch. The system can store up to five user profiles, each with specific home menus, vehicle settings, and other preferences. Specific features are displayed as windows that can be moved on the screen. Within each window, information and functions can be accessed within two screen taps.

Power for the Uconnect system comes from the new Atlantis architecture which replaces the long-standing Powernet system. With 6GB of RAM, 64GB of memory, and a 50K MIPS chip, the system now drives four displays ranging from 7 to 12.3 inches with 15 million pixels.

With Uconnect 5, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are now wireless and Alexa capability is expanded to include a built-in virtual assistant, allowing for home-to-car and car-to-home functionality.

In addition, TomTom-based navigation offers traffic and connected services. Dynamic Range Mapping offers EV owners data regarding destination range. If the location exceeds the mapped range, refueling/recharging stations, as well as cost comparisons, will be suggested along the route.
