What was it like for the early settlers?

The area that today is Barrow County was settled in the 1700s. A well-traveled Indian trail that closely follows Hog Mountain Road is today located in Winder. In the late 1700s, in the village of Snodon, a native american chief named Umausauga invited a group of settlers to stay and make their homes there. This was in part because they had impressed him with a gift of modern fish hooks, which his people used with great success.

Barrow County is named after David Crenshaw Barrow Jr. Barrow was a notable at the University of Georgia. As a student, he was educated the University and graduated with a degree in engineering in 1874. In 1878, he became an Adjunct Professor of Mathematics at the school with additional responsibilities including Professor of Civil Engineering, Head of the Department of Mathematics and Dean of the Franklin College. He was officially named Chancellor in 1906.

Does the area have any military history?

In 1788, the State of Georgia contracted with the three Humphries brothers – George, Shadrack, and Uriah, the three sons of Revolutionary War captain, Joseph Humpheris, to build four forts across Georgia. Fort Yargo was constructed in 1793. Its location was given as three miles SW of “Jug Tavern,” the original name of the area now called Winder.
Barrow was the scene one of the few Union defeats during Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. The Kings Tanyard Battle was the final battle in a group of skirmishes generally referred to as Stoneman's Raid. Here the Union cavalry was soundly defeated, losing 430 men. William Tecumseh Sherman with typical aplomb, wired Washington after arrival in Marietta following the battle stating, "On the whole the cavalry raid was not deemed a success."

Who is the town of Winder named after?

With railroad expansion bursting on the American scene in 1880s, Barrow county played host to two railroads: the Seaboard Air-line and the Gainesville and Midland. These railroads provided Barrow with transportation for its agricultural products leading to great prosperity for local farmers and merchants. One of the railway builders involved was John L. Winder, and because of his work the thankful people of Jug Tavern changed the name of their town to Winder.
